MAPS Youth Seminary

Program Overview

MAPS Youth Seminary is a program for middle and high school students in our community to study Islamic studies at a deeper level with qualified instructors. Students who complete the Youth Seminary program will gain a strong understanding of their faith, including its core beliefs, rituals, and teachings, develop a solid foundation to continue studying Islam and to serve as role models and youth leaders in the community. Youth Seminary differs from other programs in that it has high expectations and commitment from students, who will have an attendance requirement, an entrance interview, and regular assessments throughout the quarter.

Our Mission

MAPS Youth Seminary seeks to equip Muslim youth in the Puget Sound area with a strong foundation in their Deen through a more serious Islamic studies program taught by qualified instructors.

Curriculum

MAPS Youth Seminary is a 2.5-year program and operate on a semester system. Two subjects are taught each semester by MAPS Scholar recipients (Akram Baioumy, Anas Azeemi, Suhem Parack, Omer Siddiuqi, Sally Elhousieny). Upon completion of all courses, students will graduate and receive a certificate of completion. Subjects that will be taught include: Aqeedah, Fiqh, Proofs of Prophethood, Preservation of Quran/Quran Sciences, 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi/Hadith Sciences, Islamic Manners, Tafsir of the last ten Surahs, Du’aas, Stories of the Prophets, Tazkiyah/Diseases of the Heart, Lives of the Companions/Islamic History, and Contemporary Issues.  Assessments will be regularly administered throughout the semester.

Topics and Schedule

Fall-Winter 2024 semester will begin September 8, 2024 and end December 15, 2024. Winter-Spring semester will begin January 5, 2025 and end June 1, 2025.  Classes will be held in the MPR rooms on Sundays 4:00pm – 6:00pm. Youth Seminary will follow the same calendar as Sunday School with holidays the same as Lake Washington School District.

Assessments will be incorporated regularly throughout the semester in the form of short quizzes and take-home assessments. There will be homework in order to foster retention of material and help students prepare for class. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of classes.

This semester’s topics include:

Du’a

Du’a is the essence of worship for a believer. It is a noble, spiritual form of worship which allows the created to appreciate the majesty and eminence of the Creator. In this course, we will understand the concept of Du’a in Islam. We will learn its meaning, types and benefits. We will learn about the etiquette of Du’a, recommended times for Du’a to be accepted, things that aid in acceptance of Duas and things that prevent Duas from being answered. Students will be required to memorize common Duas from the Quran and Sunnah as part of this course.

    • Introduce students to the meaning, types, excellence and benefits of Dua
    • Learn the preconditions and etiquettes of Dua
    • Learn about the things that aid in acceptance of Duas and things that prevent Duas from being answered
    • Learn and memorize the common Duas from the Quran and Sunnah 
    • Inculcate and nurture a daily routine of reciting Duas

Halal & Haram in Islam

Every Muslim’s goal is to attain the pleasure of Allah (s.w.t). In order to attain his pleasure, Islam provides us with a framework to operate in. The Quran and the Hadith tell us things we should do and things we should not. This course covers the principles of Islamic law regarding what is considered permissible (Halal) and impermissible (Haraam) in various aspects of a Muslim’s life. We will understand some of the wisdom behind the rulings in Islam.

    • Introduce students to the key Islamic principles pertaining to Halal and Haraam in Islam
    • Understand the wisdom behind Islamic rulings regarding food, dress, recreation and social behavior
    • Build and nurture love for following the commands of Allah and staying away from his prohibitions
    • Provide a foundational framework for Muslims to live their lives to attain Allah’s pleasure

Admission Requirements

MAPS Youth Seminary is open to both boys and girls. Students must be at least 11 years old (5th grade and up).
 
Students who apply agree to meet attendance policies and must demonstrate commitment to the program including completing homework and assignments.
 
There might be an interview administered with the parents in order to assess students’ willingness to join the program. The program will not turn applicants away who meet these requirements.
 
Seats are limited and will be awarded on a first-come first-serve basis upon successful interview.
 
The attendance policy is that students may not miss more than 3 classes per semester. All absences must be reported to instructors.
 
The cost of the program is $300 per student per semester or $600 per student per year.
