MAPS Youth Seminary

Program Overview

MAPS Youth Seminary is a program for middle and high school students in our community to study Islamic studies at a deeper level with qualified instructors. Students who complete the Youth Seminary program will gain a strong understanding of their faith, including its core beliefs, rituals, and teachings, develop a solid foundation to continue studying Islam and to serve as role models and youth leaders in the community. Youth Seminary differs from other programs in that it has high expectations and commitment from students, who will have an attendance requirement, an entrance interview, and regular assessments throughout the quarter.

Our Mission

MAPS Youth Seminary seeks to equip Muslim youth in the Puget Sound area with a strong foundation in their Deen through a more serious Islamic studies program taught by qualified instructors.

Curriculum

MAPS Youth Seminary is a 2.5-year program and operate on a semester system. Two subjects are taught each semester by MAPS Scholar recipients (Akram Baioumy, Anas Azeemi, Suhem Parack, Omer Siddiuqi, Sally Elhousieny). Upon completion of all courses, students will graduate and receive a certificate of completion. Subjects that will be taught include: Aqeedah, Fiqh, Proofs of Prophethood, Preservation of Quran/Quran Sciences, 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi/Hadith Sciences, Islamic Manners, Tafsir of the last ten Surahs, Du’aas, Stories of the Prophets, Tazkiyah/Diseases of the Heart, Lives of the Companions/Islamic History, and Contemporary Issues.  Assessments will be regularly administered throughout the semester.

Topics and Schedule

Fall-Winter 2024 semester will begin September 8, 2024 and end December 15, 2024. Winter-Spring semester will begin January 5, 2025 and end June 1, 2025.  Classes will be held in the MPR rooms on Sundays 4:00pm – 6:00pm. Youth Seminary will follow the same calendar as Sunday School with holidays the same as Lake Washington School District.

Assessments will be incorporated regularly throughout the semester in the form of short quizzes and take-home assessments. There will be homework in order to foster retention of material and help students prepare for class. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of classes.

Current semester’s topics include Islamic Manners and Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence).

Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence)

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), focusing on the practical application of Islamic law in our daily life. Students will learn about the essential rituals of worship (ibadah), including purification (taharah), prayer (salah), zakah, fasting (sawm) and hajj. Through this course, students will develop a deeper understanding of how Islamic law guides Muslims in their daily activities. We will explore not just the ‘what’ of Islamic rulings, but also the ‘why’ and ‘how’ to develop a deeper appreciation of Islamic jurisprudence.

Topics covered:

Taharah

  • Wudhu, Tayammum, Ghusl, Najasa

Salah

  • Salah times, Shurut, Arkan, Sunnahs & Adab of Salah, Things that invalidate salah, Making up salah (Qada), Tarawih, Eid Salah, Salatul Istisqa, Salatul Janaza, etc.

Zakah

  • Who is eligible for Zakah, What is Zakah due on, Sadaqatul Fitr

Fasting 

  • Things that invalidate a fast, Expiation for missed fasts, who is exempt from fasting

Hajj

  • Types of Hajj, practical procedure of Hajj

Course Goals

  • Understand how to apply rulings of Fiqh to practical aspects of worship in your daily life(e.g. Wudhu, Salah, Zakat, Sawm & Hajj.
  • Explore spiritual dimensions of Fiqh and connect practical aspects of worship to the spiritual wisdom behind them.
  • Foster respect for differences of opinion in Fiqh.

 

Islamic Manners and Spirituality 

Primarily taught through a reading of Shaykh Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah’s book, Islamic Manners.

  • Manners of entering and leaving a house  
  • Manners of appearance 
  • Manners of visiting 
  • Manners of conversation 
  • Social Manners  
  • Manners of eating  
  • Manners of visiting the sick 
  • Manners of condolence 
  • Diseases of the heart (arrogance, jealousy, showing off…)  
  • What causes these diseases?  
  • How to cure these diseases?

Admission Requirements

MAPS Youth Seminary is open to both boys and girls. Students must be at least 11 years old (5th grade and up).
 
Students who apply agree to meet attendance policies and must demonstrate commitment to the program including completing homework and assignments.
 
There might be an interview administered with the parents in order to assess students’ willingness to join the program. The program will not turn applicants away who meet these requirements.
 
Seats are limited and will be awarded on a first-come first-serve basis upon successful interview.
 
The attendance policy is that students may not miss more than 3 classes per semester. All absences must be reported to instructors.
 
The cost of the program is $300 per student per semester or $600 per student per year.
