Job Search: MAPS Executive Director

The Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS) is the largest Islamic center in the Pacific Northwest, based in the growing, dynamic city of Redmond, Washington (home of Microsoft, and just east of Seattle). As a non-profit organization, MAPS serves a diverse Muslim population of over 6,000 families from more than 50 countries, while bringing benefit to the wider community at large in the Puget Sound region and beyond. MAPS’ mission is to bring Muslim values to life in the Pacific Northwest, nurture the faith of its community members, and foster community engagement and positive action through social activities and services. MAPS is unique in its multi-faceted programming and a strong focus on social services, advocacy for marginalized communities, and pursuit of justice to build a better society.

Since its founding in 2006, MAPS has grown rapidly (including opening a MAPS Seattle branch) and is now seeking a full-time Executive Director to manage the day-to-day operations and execute the organization’s overall strategic plan and vision. This professional position reports directly to the MAPS President.

Role and Responsibilities
The purpose of hiring an Executive Director (ED) is to transition the day-to-day operational responsibilities of the Board of Directors (Board) to professional staff under the leadership of the ED. Working with the President and Board of Directors, the ED will collaborate with MAPS Staff, the Imams, Project Leads, and various committees to streamline the execution of MAPS’ numerous activities and engagements, achieve operational efficiency, control expenses, and facilitate better coordination among various programs to achieve the goals set forth by the Board. The ED will be responsible for ensuring that organizational integrity is maintained through implemented processes and projects.

Specific Duties:
  1. Governance: Attend Board meetings and keep the Board updated on operational and staff issues while also ensuring that the Board’s priorities are implemented. ED is expected to communicate effectively with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and make informed decisions.
  2. Operational Excellence: Achieve efficiency in all operations and program execution. When it comes to programs and services, ED will partner with program leadership to create efficiency, avoid duplication, and foster collaboration. ED will also be responsible for operations of MAPS’ satellite branches and managing such staff.
  3. Marketing, Communication, and IT Strategy: Supervise the Marketing Manager to have effective communication with the community (both Muslim and non-Muslim) across all social media channels. ED will oversee all MAPS communications and marketing, and ensure that MAPS has good IT infrastructure to support its growing needs.
  4. Facility Management: Ensure cleanliness and proper maintenance of MAPS’ facilities, using operational staff. ED will work with Facility Secretary to address both short-term and long-term upgrades to MAPS facilities.
  5. Finance Management: Work with Treasurer on proper financial infrastructure to support MAPS’ operations, programs and services, while expanding funding and revenue sources. ED will also help hire a grant writer responsible for writing grants on behalf of MAPS for its services and programs.
  6. Partnering and Scaling MAPS Services: Develop and improve the infrastructure to properly scale MAPS’ services while providing accountability to the Board for MAPS’ services offerings.
  7. HR Responsibilities: Supervise and manage all operational staff (including performance reviews and defining job responsibilities); develop and implement an effective leadership development plan for staff and volunteers; and create and implement HR policies and procedures. Upon hire, ED will assess the current staffing levels and recommend an appropriate level of staffing and skills needed to scale the organization.

This role requires the ED to be on-site with a flexible schedule including weekends when most community activities take place.

Qualifications:
    • A strong foundation of knowledge/experience in the requirements and ethics of Islam, with personal characteristics that align with and reflect Muslim values and practices. Knowledge of and relationships with the Muslim community in the Puget Sound area are a plus.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, at all levels with a firm command of the English language.
    • Negotiation and conflict resolution skills (to deal with a large, diverse community) and the ability to build good relationships with the community and key stakeholders.
    • Knowledge of human resources management, project management, and financial management.
    • Ability to administrate and prioritize varied workloads, executing appropriate judgment and confidentiality.
    • Proven leadership experience, including vision casting, talent development, talent evaluation, and strategic implementation.
    • Team player with a positive service-oriented attitude.
