About the Muslim Association of Puget Sound

Our Background

MAPS was established to bring Muslim Community values to life in the Pacific Northwest.

The Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS) started in 2006 with the intent of fostering a thriving community based on Muslim values like spirituality, service, humility, modesty, knowledge, family, unity, harmony, justice, and creating a better society. Since then, we have grown to become the largest Islamic center in the State of Washington, with a diverse community of more than 5,000 families from over 50 countries.

As a mosque, we provide year-round religious services and educational/spiritual programming for Muslims (and those seeking to learn about Islam), as well as addressing the religious needs of the community from birth to celebrating weddings to honoring final rites. We also provide a social hub to build relationships between Muslim individuals, families, and organizations.

Mission

Establish an active Masjid, adhering to Islamic principles, with a welcoming environment, high quality services, a platform for community engagement and ideas to flourish, that brings benefits to Muslims and the wider community.

Our Religion

Islam is the second largest religion in the world, with a global community of over 1.8 billion followers. A part of the Abrahamic (monotheistic) faith traditions, Islam has 5 pillars that serve as the foundation of religious practice for Muslims:

Shahadah

Declaration of faith in one God (Allah) and that Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) is His messenger.

Salat

5 daily prayers, offered at prescribed times throughout the day – these are Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha.

Zakat

Charity given to the needy as a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth.

Sawm

Fasting, especially during the month of Ramadan. This practice of restraint is observed from dawn until sunset.

Hajj

The pilgrimage to Mecca, required once in the lifetime of those who are physically and financially capable.

Our Leadership

As a non-profit organization, MAPS is grateful to the volunteer Board of Directors and Board of Trustees who oversee operations, while a dedicated team of Program Leaders staff the multiple programs and services MAPS offers. Board of Directors

Mohammed Vakil

President

Mohammad Vakil is currently the President at MAPS and has served in MAPS Board of Directors in multiple capacities since 2006. He is married to Nasreen, and they both have four children. Mohammad currently works as a Technical Program Manager for Facebook’s AI & ML infrastructure team.

Mahmood Khadeer

Vice President

Mahmood Khadeer has over 27 years of experience in community service in Islamic institutions in US. He is one of the founders of MAPS and currently a Board of Trustee of MAPS. He served in various capacities in MAPS from its inception including the position of President, Vice President, member of Board of Trustees and the Project Manager who managed the complete construction project for current MAPS facility.

Junaid Ansari

Treasurer

Juned Ansari has planned and organized MAPS Annual Family Camp since 2016 and volunteered for a variety of MAPS programs and events. Juned has a Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from Mumbai University and a Master’s in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University. He is currently working as a Senior Software Engineer at Microsoft.

Hafsa Azaz

Women and Outreach

Hafsa Azaz’s family has been part of MAPS for more than a decade now. Since the past two years, Hafsa Azaz has served on the MAPS Board as the Outreach and Social Secretary. In this capacity, Hafsa has planned and executed all the social programs with an aim to bring the community together. These programs included the Poetry Contest, Annual Fundraisers, the Eid drive-throughs and, more recently, the Fall Festival. Despite the pandemic and the challenges of meeting socially, these programs were well attended and garnered high praise.

Aamer Mohammed

Religious Affairs Secretary

Aamer Mohammed is the current Religious Affairs Secretary of MAPS. He has been in this role since 2017.  Aamer moved to the Seattle area in 2011 and has been associated with MAPS for the last 6 years.  He is married to Nabiha and they both have two girls, Munazzah and Haaniya. Aamer has a Bachelors in Computer Science from BITS, Pilani, India and a Masters in Computer Science from University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He currently works as a Principal Software Engineer in Microsoft Maps & Geospatial team.

Hazim Macky

Education Secretary

Hazim Macky, a seasoned tech leader with 20+ years of experience, holds a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and an MBA and brings expertise in product management and organizational leadership. Having previously served on MAPS and Medina Academy boards, he demonstrates strong non-profit leadership. Since 2010, his active involvement includes helping initiate MAPS-MCRC, MAPS-MCOC and Ramadan programs. As Education Secretary, Hazim aims to foster a learning culture at MAPS, providing quality Islamic education and shaping model citizens inspired by Islamic principles.

Hend Alhinnawi

Outreach and Advocacy

Hend Alhinnawi is a Syrian American who was raised in a vibrant Muslim community in Los Angeles and has been in Washington State for the past five years. She lives in Kirkland with her husband, Taha, and their two children. As the  Outreach and Advocacy Secretary at MAPS, she is looking forward to working with the community on issues that matter to them and promoting Muslim visibility in public spaces. 

Lisa Putri

Social Secretary

My name is Lisa Putri. With my family of three, we are MAPS enthusiasts. I remember I started commuting to MAPS when I arrived in Redmond about 18 years ago. Eventually, I took the role of a teacher at MAPS Early Education Program, Precious Hearts Pre-K for 11 years.

I help with social events at MAPS including the Fall Festival, MAPS Banquet, MAPS IOC, Interfaith and Outreach Committee, etc.

Zohaib Ali

Secretary General

Zohaib Ali has been a steady pillar of the community for many years and has been amongst the core group of Ramadan volunteers for the past two years. He brings with him a wealth of prior community leadership experience in other Islamic organizations as well as executive management skills from his professional career. He is currently a Group Product Manager at Microsoft and was a VP at Zillow. 
 
He lives in Redmond, WA with his wife Nida Ali and his 9 year-old Ayyub Ali.

Imams

Sheikh Mohamad Joban

Sheikh Mohamad Joban is a full-time Imam at MAPS. Residing in Redmond with his wife and twin children, he is also the current president of the Imam Fatwa Committee in WA, an instructor of Internet Islamic University, and the Muslim chaplain for the Department of Corrections in WA. Before coming to MAPS, he was a full-time Imam of the Islamic Center of Olympia. He has a B.A. in Arabic from the Islamic University in Jakarta, Indonesia and a B.A. in Theology, Islamic Call and Culture as well as an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the prestigious University of Al-Azhar in Cairo.

Sheikh Adam Jamal

Imam Adam Jamal, M.Ed., serves as the Head Imam at MAPS. He is married to a psychiatrist and is a proud father of three young children. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Imam Adam began his Islamic and Arabic studies at Jamiatul-Ilm in Blackburn, UK. He earned a BA in Islamic Law from IESH in Château-Chinon, France and pursued advanced studies in Islamic Law in Cairo, Egypt. Additionally, he holds a Master’s in Education from MIHE in the UK. Prior to joining MAPS, he was the Director and Lead Instructor of Bayyinah Institute’s Dream Program and created getquranic.com, a mobile application designed to help people understand the language of the Quran. Imam Adam provides spiritual and intellectual guidance to the entire MAPS community, with a particular focus on engaging youth, young professionals, and parents, supported by the collective efforts of all our imams.

Sheikh Akram Baioumy

Imam Akram Baioumy serves as the Imam of MAPS Seattle. He graduated from the School of Psychology at the University of Washington in 2019. He then moved to Dallas, Texas for a year to complete the Islamic Studies Intensive seminary at Qalam Institute and is currently enrolled in the ‘Aalamiyyah program. He has found a passion in the Islamic Sciences and is committed to always keep studying. He also serves as a youth Islamic studies teacher at MAPS where he teaches Fiqh, Aqeedah, Tafsir, and Seerah.
