MAPS Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the history of African Americans and celebrate the progress they have made in the United States. It’s important to note that African American Muslims have been part of the fabric of the U.S. from the beginning. 

For this month, we will celebrate Black History Month and learn about some of the incredible accomplishments that people of color have achieved in recent years within our communities.  

MAPS Family Night 
Friday, Feb 3 at 7:00 p.m. 

Kicking off the Black History Month with two distinguished guests, sr. Jamilah Ibrahim and Adasha Turner.

Join us Friday, Feb. 3rd, to celebrate the presence of one of our dearest and respected elderly sisters Jamila Ibrahim. Sister Jamila is an African American Muslim activist in Chicago, Texas and Washington state for more than 60 years. She is a fearless activist and organizer of ICNA Homes for Women and Children in Texas. She is a leading member of Golden Times with MAPS-MCRC.  

Sister Adasha Turner is the Founder & Chief Executive Officer at Modest Family Solutions, the first black-led organization to provide culturally relevant food to communities. Sister Adasha is one of the leaders of Black, Indigenous, People Of Color, BIPOC, in our community. She will facilitate a heartfelt discussion on Family Night Potluck.  

The Family Night Potluck will be catered by Nia’s Kitchen, a food recovery zero waste kitchen serving communities within greater Seattle area. More info about Nia’s kitchen here.  


Heart Work for Community Leaders 
Friday, Feb 24 at 5 p.m.  

A 2-hour workshop on anti-Blackness in the Muslim Community with Ustadha Rukayat Yakub, Educator and Author. The founder of Light Legacy Books, sr. Rukayat, is an instructor with Ribaat. Currently, she is studying in Islamic Education for her master degree.  

In this workshop, we learn how to recognize and constructively address prejudice toward Muslim African Americans.  


Book Reading and Book Signing 
Saturday, Feb. 25, 5 to 8 p.m. 

Book reading and book signing with Sh. Ahmadu Bamba and Sr. Rakyat Yakub.  Q and A session for K to 5 graders.  

If you would like to learn more, here are some fun facts to help you celebrate Black History Month!  

  1. Black History Month themes change yearly. This year’s theme: Black Resistance.   
  2. Civil Rights leaders including Rosa Parks, W.E.B Du Bois, Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King jr. popularized Black History Month.   
  3. In 1968, members of Black United Students at Kent State University started protesting for Black History Month.   
  4. Countries worldwide celebrate Black History Month.   
  5. Black History Month recognizes all African American, including Black Muslims, Experiences. 

Come socialize with local families and learn about our sisters and brothers in African American communities.
