Dr. Wael Bahaa-El-Din is a computer scientist by training. Heworked for several years in academia before moving to thesoftware/hardware industry. He worked for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) for seven years and then Microsoft for 15 years, and had worked on the design, architecture, and performance analysis of operating systems, database systems, networking, server applications, client applications, tools, and hardware. He is considered one of the top software industry experts in software performance, reliability, scalability and quality. In 2010, Dr. Bahaa-El-Din retired from Microsoft as a Corporate Vice President and a Microsoft Fellow (highest technical level). Dr. Bahaa-El-Din has served as the President of the Interfaith and Outreach Committee (IOC) at MAPS during 2011 to 2014. The IOC has played an important role to inspire our greater community with the beauty of Islam as a religion of mercy and peace to the world. IOC organizes many interfaith activities through the yearincluding Church talks about Islam, school educational talks, community activities, interfaith dialogues, and civil right activities. Dr. Wael Bahaa-El-Din was a member of the development committee that was responsible for buying, funding and building the current MAPS community center in 2011. He is the President of the Hilal Foundation which bought the original MAPS building for $3 million in 2009-2010 during the sales slump in Redmond. Hilal Foundation also paid for 50% of the new building improvements so the building would finish in record time. The current MAPS facility is valued for $20-$29 dollars due to the new zoning and improvements. Dr.Wael Bahaa-El-Din was also involved in establishing the Mayf community center in Burien (a very large Islamic center south of Seattle), and the Islamic Community Center of Bothell (ICOB). In addition to developing community centers like MAPS, MayF and ICOB, Dr. Wael Bahaa-El-Din helped local and national organizations much as the Muslim Housing, Medina Academy, etc. …. to improve education and to help the needy and homeless. Dr. Bahaa-El-Din has a special emphasis on helping the education of poor children and Orphans in Egypt (his beloved country of origin) for the last 30 years. Dr. Bahaa-El-Din has been a member of the BOT (Board of Trustees) for 5 five years. His Vision for MAPS is “To build an exemplary and unifying organization that enriches the quality of life for Muslims in the Northwest of the U.S. via comprehensive activities and services in addition to enhancing the Muslims’ and Islam’s image in the area”. An exemplary MAPS should expand high-quality activities being offered for members of all ages every year, be open and attract all Muslims without judgment, build a great pool of volunteers and leaders, have sound financial resources, expand the role of women and youth in leading the organization, strive to unite all Muslims in the area, have great communicators and scholars and build strong alliances with political and interfaith leaders.
