Council Members Sarah Perry and Girmay Zahilay Recognize American Muslim Holidays

As’salaam Alaikum (peace be upon you):

I am very excited to share that just this week, the King County Council shared a Recognition of American Muslim Holidays! Sponsored by King County Councilmembers Sarah Perry and Girmay Zahilay, this recognition honors the celebration of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha by Muslims, recognizes the importance of the religious freedom in our country to celebrate according to our faith, and acknowledges Muslim contributions to our county.

This announcement comes just after we shared that Governor Jay Inslee proclaimed July 2022 as “Muslim-American Heritage Month”! We are so grateful to our King County Council for acknowledging our Islamic celebrations and contributions, and for specifically naming MAPS in the Recognition.

I had the opportunity to accept the recognition on behalf of our community during the Council meeting and both myself and Sister Aneelah Afzali shared a few words. I also want to thank Osman Salahuddin who works as the Communications & Community Engagement Manager for Councilmember Perry and serves as the Facilities Director on the MAPS Board. He drove this initiative to the King County Council and worked to draft this recognition with Sister Aneelah.

Honoring religious freedom and celebration is so important to create a welcoming and inclusive county, and we thank our King County elected officials who recognized this by passing this recognition! Please take a moment to thank the Council for this recognition by emailing a simple thank you to ZZCNCMEMBERS@kingcounty.gov (which reaches all 9 Councilmembers).

Peace be with you,
Hyder Ali
