Committee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (CDEI)

“All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.” – Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Who We Are

The Committee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at MAPS (MAPS-CDEI) was created in Fall 2019 to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within our organization and uphold Islamic teachings condemning racism.  MAPS-CDEI consists of members from diverse backgrounds with the express purpose and goals of addressing concerns about racism, raising awareness about racial bias, educating the community, identifying issues, proposing solutions, and helping create a more inclusive environment for all at MAPS.

CDEI Public Statement on Racism

MAPS strives to end racism and discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, or any other form at MAPS according to the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

MAPS unequivocally embraces Islam’s intolerance for racism. We believe in promoting respect, celebrating diversity, demanding ethical leadership, and working tirelessly to advance peace and harmony as central tenets of our work.

We recognize we have more work to do to create a more just, open, and welcoming mosque and community center for all people. We acknowledge and support Black humanity and its value to our community. We acknowledge the sadness, anger, mental and emotional exhaustion that our African American and Black members and other minorities continue to experience. The MAPS Board understands its responsibility towards truth, equity, and justice, and will work with our members to dismantle any and all forms of systemic racism within our organization.

To do this, we will carefully look at our organization’s culture, policies, partners, and the work we do in our community as we work to improve ourselves and benefit the community at large. MAPS will also work towards being an anti-racist organization in alignment with our Islamic teachings and our long history and value of serving humanity.

What We Do

Training

We seek to increase awareness, knowledge, and engagement of MAPS leaders, staff, and volunteers in creating a more inclusive mosque and community. This is accomplished by designing and implementing a curriculum focused on (i) understanding the Black American struggle, individual implicit biases, and tools to combat biases, and (ii) learning how to become an anti-racist mosque and community center.

Policy

We review community needs and concerns and recommend proposals to the MAPS Board that help create an inclusive space at MAPS and promote anti-racist policies.

Programming

We plan events to raise awareness and educate the wider MAPS community on racism and race issues. This includes guest speakers, book club discussions, and displays of the beautiful heritage, history, and culture at MAPS. In addition, we create space for difficult conversations, understanding and healing in the community as we struggle with race issues – including by forging relationships between MAPS leadership and the diverse MAPS community – and using such dialogue to challenge us to diversify and rise together to create the anti-racist institution we seek.

MAPS-CDEI works to create a more equitable, just and inclusive environment for all at MAPS. In light of local and national events in 2020 – including specifically the national uprising for racial justice – the work of MAPS-CDEI has become more important than ever. MAPS-CDEI organizes events and programs at MAPS, in addition to Black History Month at MAPS, to educate the community on anti-Black racism, while also working with the MAPS Board to provide training and ensure ongoing dialogue on the topics of race, diversity, equity and inclusion.

In 2020, MAPS-CDEI launched a campaign to raise awareness about anti-Black racism even within the Muslim community (despite Islamic teachings against racism). Our programming included the following at MAPS:
  • Black History Month
  • National Day of Outrage: Stand in Solidarity
  • Juneteenth – Shattering the Shackles: African Islam & American Liberty
  • Black Lives Matter: Black Immigrants/Refugees Solidarity Rally
  • Invisible Muslims: Africa, Black People, and the History of Islam
  • Community Check-In on Racism
  • Anti-Racism 101 Training
